>> top stories this saturday, march 9th. bar owners in downtown walnut creek making changes in how they serve patrons. >> a new police substation is up and running in a part of san francisco that's known for increased violence. and a gun buyback event today in a bay area city known for gun violence. we'll have a live report. >> hello everybody. welcome to kron 4 news weekend. i'm ysabel duron >> i'm marty gonzalez we'll get to the news in a moment. but first, let's get a quick check of your forecast with janu. when good morning marty. we

are taking alar to look outside the golden gate bridge. a beautiful start to the weekend, up plenty of sunshine and we're expecting sunshine this afternoon with warming temperatures. clear and cool during the overnight hours. it is chilly in the north this morning. 36 degrees in santa rosa and 38 degrees in napa. low '40's for the eastern shore. 46 degrees currently in san jose. 66 degrees today in los gatos 68 in oakland. a little chillier along the coast and the peninsula. we will season '70s and the north bay. 70 in santa rosa and napa. we will continue to feel the warming trend and look at the extended

forecast but for now erica back over the years. >> there was a three-point-four magnitude earthquake off the coast near bolinas this morning. geological survey, the quake hit around 2:15 a-m. the epicenter was 23 miles south west of bolinas. no reports yet of injuries or damage. >> bar patrons in downtown walnut creek have started seeing changes at their local watering holes. police are trying to avoid more incidents like this one. especially over the past three weeks, when the police chief announced the elimination of the downtown patrol program because of staffing issues. kron four's philippe djegal spoke with bar managers who say they're doing their best to keep weekend nights >> as part of their conditional use permit agreement, downtown walnut creek bar managers say they stagger closing times on busy nights. shutting down sections of the bar every 15 minutes after one o'clock in the morning. having earlier last calls for alcohol. and, closing down entirely before two o'clock in the morning. bar owners say they have

noticed fewer officers patrolling downtown on foot on fridays, and saturdays, but because the downtown patrol program has been so successful over the past year. they say, so far, there hasn't been much violence. the police department is also located downtown. which allows officers to still respond to bar altercations quickly. in walnut creek, philippe djegal, kron four news. >> more police - less crime. so far that appears to be the case in the mid-market

area of san francisco. it is now home to a new police sub station. the new station opened on thursday and is located on sixth street. considered by many to be one of the higher crime areas in the city. local merchants are hoping that the substation and the 24 officers who work there will help to reduce crime in the area. even though the station has only been open for a few days, those who live and work nearby say they already see a higher police presence. they're walking around all over. daytime i see them going back and forth back- and-forth. i think there was a robbery here yesterday and they were on it right away. >> although those in the area say the station is a great addition, there are limitations because it closes at 10:30 at night. they are hoping the hours will change and the police will stick around longer. >> a san jose jury finds a former engineer -- accused in the 2008 shooting deaths of three colleagues -- guilty on three counts of frst degree murder.

now the jury will decide if jing wu was insane when he committed the murders. wu reportedly begged to get his job back before murdering three of his supervisors at the santa clara semi-conductor firm. wu was convicted of special circumstances which means that he could get the death penalty or a life sentence>> a bay area family with a five year old boy with autism is filing a civil lawsuit against a special education teacher. alexia bogdis worked at roosevelt elementary school in redwood city. she was arrested last year on allegations she was abusing her students. that included slapping a student, twisting a student's wrist and kicking the back of a chair. hitting a student. now thoe charges have been evidence. the district attorney says the teachers aides who originally accused bogdis of bad behaviour. have "backed off their original statements", forcing the d-a to drop charges. >> thieves are taking crime a step further in the bernal heights neighborhood of san francisco.

in the last few weeks, they've started breaking into cars so they can eventually get access to the victims' garages. kron four's j-r stone shows please tell me there have been several heartbreaking cases where thieves went for garage door openers. that would have your address and access to the garage. the warning is to not leave your garage door clicker in the car. but not everyone is taking to the warning. as i walked the streets, icy garage door openers in plain view on visors. several times. it got to where i had to start looking at nicer cars. police say these have cleared of garages and stolen high-priced bikes. i

had not heard of that before, but i'm glad to hear there is an investigation going on. i'm surprised to hear that cars and rise stores are being opened by criminals. because of these burglars investigators tell me they were assigned undercover officers. j.r. stone kron 4 news. >> new this morning.it appears charges against rapper m-c hammer have been dropped. the rapper was arrested at a dublin shopping center two weeks ago and was charged for resisting an officer. last night, m-c hammer took to twitter to announce that the charges had been dropped. the 50-year-old was arrested on february 21st following

close to mid-70s by mid- week. >> plans are already underway for a re-opening, just hours after a fire damages berkley's famous chez panisse restaurant. the friday morning blaze caused up to 200-thousand dollars in damage. investigators believe it was electrical wiring under the building's porch that started the fire. a sprinkler system inside the restaurant helped stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the building. owner alice waters hopes to reopen as soon as next >> alameda county prosecutors are sorting through evidence from a gang raid that led to nearly 20 arrests. state, local and federal officials worked together on "operation cease-fire." it's a crime-fighting plan meant to help avoid a war between violent gangs mostly based in oakland. local prosecutors say they're doing their best to quickly process those >> "the prosecutors from my office will spend this weekend and the next few days working closely with law enforcement, in particular the oakland police officers.both going through the reports and the evidence so that we can file the charges that are

supported by the evidence, and bring justice to oakland." this operation was weeks in the planning. officials say they acted quickly on friday based on intelligence that the gang members were planning to >> friday's raids weren't limited to just oakland. kron 4's charles clifford explains how this effort area. >> the oakland police department says that these raids are actually part of an ongoing effort, and they aren't revealing exactly where the arrest were made friday morning, but here's what we do know. google earth the main focus of the effort was in oakland, specifically east oakland. 20 warrants were served across the city. also, two search warrants were served 30 miles to the east in antioch there was also a raid in nearby brentwood. and finally a single warrant was served in pacifica, which is south of san francisco standup now, the multi agency task force, led by opd, served 24 high risk warrants, 21 of the raids were conducted simultaneously between 5am

and 7am friday morning and they say that the raids required no significant use of force and that there were no injuries. in the newsroom, charles clifford kron 4 news. >> operators of the cat haven wildlife sanctuary near fresno, say they will re-open on sunday. this comes just four days after volunteer dianna hansen was killed when a 550-pound lion escaped from an enclosure and broke her neck with one swipe of his paw. investigators believe that the five-year-old male lion lifted the door of his partially closed feeding cage with its paw. founder dale anderson says there is no evidence that hansen's death was due to her own carelessness.

>> hansen's family is did not suffer. the autopsy shows that she was killed instantly when the lion attacked her. family members don't believe it was a mauling but rather a lion trying to be playful, and the situation suddenly turned tragic. a sheriff's deputy shot and killed the lion named cous cous so they could attend to hansen. a dog survived a 300 footfall. we will

potentially running out. the cards are to places like meyer target wahl mart. >> thanks mike. >> more restrictions on gun shows at the cow palace in daly city. yesterday, state senator mark leno along with other city leaders. announced a bill that would require both san francisco and san mateo counties. to vote on whether gun shows could be allowed at the cow palace. the bill would not outright ban the shows, but places control at the county level to allow the events. >> "i acknowledge both counties board of supervisors have repeatedly passed resolutions unaminously urging the state not th have the gun shows at this location but i can tell you what either borad would do five or ten or thirty years from now if there were to reach a

>> in san jose. police say they've solved city. one suspect, vincent gallagos. is behind bars, he's accused of stabbing a man to death. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc7 news. the vitim, in his twenties, was found near guadalupe oak grove park on wednesday. >> and an arrest also made in another murder. this woman regina butler. is accused of stabbing and killing her boyfriend in his apartment. this was the scene thursday hilltop manor senior home. from dementia-- went missing in early february. police say at some point over the last few weeks, he showed up without anyone noticing. and was killed. this marked san jose's eighth homicide of the year. >> here's a story we can guarantee to tell you about
